Becoming a CPA


Indiana CPAs must meet the following rigorous standards and licensing requirements:

  1. Complete at least 150 hours of education from an accredited college program

    • Regarded as the most rigorous of all professional certification exams, the 14-hour CPA Exam has four sections:
      1. Auditing and Attestation
      2. Financial Accounting and Reporting
      3. Regulation
      4. Business Environment and Concepts
    • The Board of Examiners of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is responsible for preparing and grading the Exam 
  2. Acquire two years of real-world work experience
    • Experience constitutes the use of accounting, attest, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting skills
    • Experience may be gained through employment in government, business and industry, academia or public practice
    • Experience must be verified by a licensee

  3. Complete 120 hours of continuing professional education every three years to maintain CPA license, including at least 20 hours each year

  4. Adhere to a professional code of conduct stressing the core values of the profession:
    • Independence
    • Objectivity
    • Integrity  
    • Commitment to Serving and Protecting the Public Interest
