Expanding Horizons

Financial Education for Students in Grades 4 - 9

Expanding Horizons is about enhancing the educational well being of Indiana middle school and high school students. Through financial education, Indiana CPAs and educators can contribute to the personal and professional development of future business persons and community leaders. By volunteering time and making the commitment, students will benefit and learn to make wiser career choices and financial decisions. Overall, our society will progress by having generations of more intellectually competent citizens and CPA professionals.

The lesson plans developed as part of the Expanding Horizons initiative are part of the Indiana CPA Society's Financial Literacy initiative.

The mission of Expanding Horizons is:
To introduce students to the importance of money management; equip students with important business and financial concepts that lead to sound money management and alert them to the wealth of opportunities that the CPA designation yields.
To awaken CPAs to the need to educate students on these concepts and the versatility of the CPA profession at an earlier, more impressionable age and provide CPAs with the necessary educational resources to excite students about learning and the professional opportunities of the CPA.
To improve the overall quality of the CPA profession by creating more well educated and diverse professionals.

These lessons cover various accounting and personal finance-related topics and can be used at both the middle school and high school level. Each lesson contains three parts. Using vocabulary terms and real-world examples that connect with middle school and high school students' interests, the curriculum first introduces key financial concepts in a discussion/presentation format. The second section consists of an in-class assignment for the students to complete following your presentation. Some exercises are intended for the students to work through by themselves, while others have been created as collaborative efforts for you and the students. An answer sheet is also included to check the students' progress.

Thank you for your commitment to expanding the horizons of Indiana students.
