Malayna Pottschmidt
Senior Tax Associate, RSM US LLP | Indiana CPA Educational Foundation Scholarship Recipient 2022–23 | INCPAS Scholar 2015–16
Learn More About Malayna
When we first spoke with Malayna in 2018, she was a sophomore at Butler University, working nights at a hotel and preparing for an internship with Eli Lilly and Company. Fast forward to today: after graduating Cum Laude with Distinction in Accounting and obtaining her Master of Professional Accounting in 2023, she now works at RSM US LLP as a senior tax associate.
INCPAS: Back in 2018, you shared your goal of becoming a Fortune 500 CFO. What are your career goals today?
Malayna: My ultimate goal is still in that area, but I’ve become much more flexible over time. I see myself in a leadership role—whether that’s CFO, partner, or another path—where I can make a positive impact on my colleagues and clients.
INCPAS: You once said success in college came down to time management, health, and consistency. How have those lessons shaped your journey?
Malayna: They’re still true for me. Time management was essential when I was working multiple jobs while in school, though lack of rest took a toll. I’d add one more tip now: schedule time to rest. Without it, you can’t show up at your best. Consistency is also key—stay focused on your goals, but allow yourself space to refocus when needed.
INCPAS: In addition to the Indiana CPA Society Educational Foundation Scholarship, you’ve credited the Scholars program with putting you on the CPA path. What advice would you share with current Scholars?
Malayna: Take full advantage of the program. Network with professionals you meet, because those connections can open doors—I got my first internship that way. And remember: no goal is unreachable. Stay positive, stay determined, and don’t let anything stand in your way.

Learn More About Jose
Jose joined the INCPAS Scholars program in 2016–17 and began his career at KPMG as a financial due diligence associate in 2024. Along the way, he completed five internships—including roles at KPMG and Goldman Sachs—that gave him a well-rounded view of accounting and finance. Now, with just one section of the CPA Exam left to pass, he’s reflecting on the programs and experiences that helped shape his path.
INCPAS: What was your biggest takeaway from the INCPAS Scholars program?
Jose: It gave me valuable connections and a strong foundation in the CPA profession. It truly kickstarted my career path, and I’m grateful for the opportunities it provided.
INCPAS: You were also part of Purdue’s Business Opportunities Program (BOP). How did that shape your journey?
Jose: BOP broadened my perspective of accounting beyond tax and audit. It gave me tools to navigate challenges as a first-generation college student and helped me grow as a professional. The support I received there was invaluable.
INCPAS: How did your internships prepare you for KPMG?
Jose: Completing five internships exposed me to public accounting, finance, and corporate accounting. Each one strengthened my skills and confidence, and ultimately helped me land my current role.
INCPAS: What excites you most about your work today—and what’s next?
Jose: I love that my role blends finance and accounting, with the added excitement of M&A work. Looking ahead, I aspire to establish a consulting firm that empowers Latino-owned businesses to thrive.
Adrianna Avila
Insurance Audit Associate, PwC | INCPAS Scholar 2016–17
Learn More About Adrianna
When Adrianna joined the INCPAS Scholars program as a junior in high school, she was eager to learn from her mentor and get a real-world look into the CPA profession. That experience helped guide her path through Purdue University, two internships with PwC, and now into her full-time role as an external audit associate.
INCPAS: What was the most valuable lesson your mentor shared with you?
Adrianna: She taught me to find the work environment that fits me best, and to never stop developing interpersonal skills. Both lessons have been key as I started my career.
INCPAS: You interned with PwC during two unusual summers. What stood out most about that experience?
Adrianna: Definitely the people. Even though COVID precautions meant I couldn’t be in the office, PwC made sure we felt included and connected. That sense of comradery was huge.
INCPAS: What advice do you have for students looking for the right internship?
Adrianna: Do your homework on every company and don’t be afraid to try out multiple internships. For me, PwC stood out for its values and focus on personal development, but experiencing different firms helps you know where you’ll thrive.
INCPAS: What’s your favorite part of your job now—and what’s next?
Adrianna: I love working with my team and clients to solve problems. I’m a people person, so that social aspect makes the work really enjoyable. Looking ahead, I’m preparing for the CPA Exam, hoping to complete all sections in my first year. Long term, I’d love to work abroad and eventually become a PwC partner.
