INCPAS Chair Barry Hall, CPA, CGMA, reflects on change management.
How do you personally feel about change?
Change is going to happen whether you want it to or not. The question is: how do you react to change? Do you fight it and get frustrated by it? Do you wait and see what other firms are doing? Or do you embrace it, lean into it and capitalize on it to enhance the value your firm brings to clients, the profession and future recruits? The choice is your own.
What advice do you have for young people or career-changers just entering the profession?
We’ve all read that young people entering the workforce will have several jobs and potentially multiple careers before they “settle in” for the long-term. My advice for anyone starting a new job is to approach it as if it will be your last. Do your best at even the most menial tasks, seek knowledge, ask for more responsibility and show the unique value you bring to the organization. This attitude will make you a stronger professional whether it is your first job or your last.
How will the Society, after such a unique year, move forward with its strategic plan?
The strategic plan is reviewed and tailored annually in response to the current environment, which is influenced greatly by a pandemic that continues to impact Indiana, the U.S. and world. The Society’s strategic plan for 2021–22 focuses on helping members develop the expanding skills and knowledge they need now, including an understanding of emerging technologies and the changing role of the CPA. We will also continue to advocate for our members and the profession, and build a stronger talent pipeline for the future.
