CJ Bails, CPA
Assurance Manager – PwC
You are part of the INCPAS Young Pros Leadership Academy (YPLA). What has been your biggest takeaway from the experience?
The importance of being intentional with my goals by writing them down and creating both short- and long-term plans. Putting goals on paper has helped me clarify my priorities, stay accountable and turn ideas into actionable steps.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The people and the opportunity to continue growing professionally. I enjoy building relationships with my teams and clients, and as I’ve progressed in my career, mentoring others and helping them grow has become especially rewarding.
You have a young family. Who’s in your photo, and what were you celebrating?
This photo was taken at my son Noah’s first birthday party and captures one of my favorite roles outside of work — being a dad. My favorite title is “Dad,” and I love sharing the things I enjoy with my kids, including my love for sneakers, as you can see from our matching pairs. Moments like this remind me that while I’m proud of my career and everything I’ve accomplished professionally, being a dad is the role I’m most grateful for.
You are a recipient of the INCPAS Volunteer of the Year award. How did you first get involved with the Society, and what kept you involved?
I first got involved with INCPAS as a student at IU, when I volunteered on a panel for high school students visiting campus, and that experience helped me build a connection with the Society. I’ve stayed involved because I value the opportunity to give back to the profession, build relationships with other professionals and support the next generation of accountants.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the profession?
Be willing to say yes to opportunities that challenge you, even when you don’t feel completely ready. Also, focus on learning, building relationships and becoming someone others can rely on. Find people who will challenge and advocate for you and look for opportunities to invest in others along the way.
What is the best podcast you’ve listened to lately?
A favorite podcast of mine is Club 520 with Jeff Teague. It’s a great mix of basketball stories, behind-the-scenes NBA experiences and humor that makes it entertaining.
Do you have any hobbies? How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Outside of work, most of my time revolves around my family and keeping up with our two young kids. I also enjoy watching sports — especially college football and the NFL — and traveling with my family.
