TELL US WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WHERE YOU ARE IN YOUR PICTURE.

I am cross country skiing on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Indiana circa winter 2019.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A CPA?

I entered public accounting after graduation to pursue a more quantitative and diverse career in state and local taxation, instead of a potentially more theoretical and narrowly defined path through the practice of law. Obtaining the credential was strongly encouraged at the first firm I joined. In retrospect, I am extremely grateful for taking the public accounting route and being “strongly encouraged” to acquire the CPA designation so early in my career.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A CROSS COUNTRY SKIER?

On and off amateur status since getting married.

HOW DO YOU UNWIND AFTER A BUSY DAY AT THE OFFICE?

I walk my miniature golden doodles, Wrigley and Scout.

WHAT’S ON YOUR DESK RIGHT NOW?

Lots of things. During busy season there were a lot of tax returns, but right now I have a a piping hot cup of dark roast coffee sitting on my desk.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING YOU’VE READ RECENTLY?

The U.S. Supreme Court’s South Dakota v. Wayfair case which overturned 50 years of precedent that governed how out-of-state retailers were required to comply with in-state sales tax registration and collection responsibilities.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

Working with my team to resolve our clients’ state and local tax challenges.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE APP AND WHY?

LinkedIn allows me to keep up-todate on current tax developments and share our team’s thought leadership with clients, colleagues and prospects.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN THE PROFESSION?

Become a CPA as soon as you can, before your career and personal obligations begin to limit your ability to focus on studying for and passing the Exam.
