Laura Alarcon
Accounting Student – Purdue University
INCPAS Student Ambassador 2026
INCPAS Scholar 2023–24
You are one of INCPAS’ first student ambassadors! What are your goals as campus ambassador at Purdue?
To give Purdue students greater exposure to INCPAS student membership and the many networking opportunities it offers. I was fortunate to be introduced to INCPAS in high school, and it opened so many doors for me.
You are involved in many activities on campus. What does a typical day look like?
Most mornings start around 7–8 a.m. I have classes or work until noon–1 p.m, then grab lunch before heading to my afternoon classes. My last class ends at 6:30 p.m, and afterward, I do my evening routine: I finish weekly assignments, go to the gym, have dinner with friends and take some time to unwind before bed. It’s a busy schedule, but I thrive in highly involved environments.
Where are you in your photo?
This photo was taken in Ollantaytambo, an Inca archeological site located in Peru. I studied abroad there my freshman year, and Ollantaytambo was one of my favorite places we visited, alongside Machu Picchu. This trip showed me the value of global experiences.
Tell us about your experience serving as a counselor for NABA’s ACAP program.
It was amazing! I believe every high schooler interested in accounting should take advantage of ACAP. It provides so much exposure to the accounting field and college life. My favorite memory of the week was working with my student group on a case competition — I enjoyed seeing them gain confidence throughout the week and present a case in front of a judge panel.
Why did you choose accounting as your major?
I have always been drawn to numbers. When I was little, my favorite toy was a cash register that let me add up anything I wanted. As I grew older, math became my favorite subject, and coming from a family full of business majors, I eventually gravitated toward accounting. My mom is an accountant and tax professional, so I have been exposed to the field for a very long time. I know this is an industry where I can thrive!
You’re currently interning at Huth Thompson LLP. What are you learning there that’s helping you prepare for a future career in accounting?
When I first started, I had only taken one accounting class, so this opportunity has been very valuable. I have learned how to prepare financial statements, trial balances, memos and analytical reviews. I have also gotten exposure to QuickBooks and Engagement Manager. Beyond the technicalities, I have learned to work efficiently while providing quality work to clients.
What app, tool or technology do you rely on most as a student right now, and what makes it so helpful?
Google Calendar keeps me consistently organized and accountable.
When you’re not studying or in class, how do you like to recharge?
My favorite way to recharge is doing something relaxing like playing Sudoku or working on a puzzle
