Without further ado, we’re thrilled to introduce the 2025 INCPAS CPA Celebration Awards finalists! These are the professionals driving change, bringing innovative ideas to the table, strengthening the pipeline and making a positive impact on the accounting profession.

 


 

The Advocacy Award recognizes an individual or organization who has gone above and beyond to advocate for the CPA profession—partnering with the Society’s advocacy team, legislators and regulators to make a real impact.

Photo of Diane SturekDiane Sturek, CPA: Advocacy, Education and Expanding Access to the CPA Profession

Diane Sturek, professor at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Indianapolis, shapes the profession daily. As a past chair of the INCPAS Board of Directors, Diane played a foundational role in the Society’s readiness to pursue additional pathways legislation. Her leadership helped build the momentum and trust needed for the Board to move forward with this transformative initiative that will expand access to the CPA profession for future generations.

Known for making accounting approachable and inspiring for students, her nominator, a student, shared: “She continues to be an influential role model for what being passionate about a profession looks like.”

Beyond the classroom, Diane helped build the INCPAS Educators Learning Network, regularly joins INCPAS Scholars events and encourages students to engage with the profession early. Her blend of policy leadership, mentorship and passion for ethics continues to shape the future of accounting in Indiana.

Caleb Bullock is a managing director at CBIZ CPAs and a passionate advocate for CPAs at every level—local, state and national. He serves on the AICPA Council, where he engages directly with lawmakers to shape policy and legislation that impacts the profession.

“Caleb is passionate about improving the CPA profession. He works with lobbyists and elected officials to ensure the voices of accounting professionals are heard on a local, state and national level.”

Caleb’s advocacy is rooted in relationships—he builds strong connections with elected officials and encourages others in the profession to do the same. He’s a longtime INCPAS volunteer, serving on the Ethics Committee, Leadership Cabinet and as a PAC Trustee and CPA Advocate. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to strengthening the profession and ensuring CPAs have a seat at the table when it matters most.

 


 

The Breakthrough Award honors a member who has overcome significant challenges or adversity in their path to professional success.

David Kane’s journey to manager at CBIZ CPAs is marked by resilience and heart. Two years into his career and one day after the birth of his third daughter, David was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation while continuing to work and care for his family—losing credit for two CPA Exams along the way. By 2019, David had completed treatment, and in 2022, he passed all four CPA Exams, reclaiming the ones he had lost.

“David’s journey highlights his perseverance, discipline and strength of character. He uplifts those around him and invests in the growth of newer team members.”

David’s story is one of quiet strength. He leads by example, mentors with patience and brings integrity to everything he does. His path shows that breakthrough moments often come from the hardest chapters—and that leadership can be both humble and powerful.

Nick Muller’s journey to manager at Kruggel Lawton CPAs is rooted in strength, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to growth. After his parents struggled with addiction, Nick and his younger sister were raised by their grandparents. In high school, Nick drove two hours a day to stay enrolled at his school and ensure his sister had stability.

“Nick overcame challenges that would derail most people. Instead, he built a life of purpose and service—first for his family, and now for his clients and colleagues.”

Nick worked part-time to afford college, completed two internships and passed all four CPA Exams while working full time. He’s known for his humility, integrity and ability to connect with others. He mentors younger staff, leads internal initiatives and was honored with the firm’s prestigious HERM Award for exemplifying its core values.

“Nick humanizes accounting. He sees the people behind the numbers and leads with a servant’s heart.” Nick’s story is a powerful reminder that breakthrough isn’t just about overcoming—it’s about choosing to rise, to serve and to lead with compassion and courage.

Hailey Rolsten, director in KSM’s Business Advisory Group, has built a career defined by grit and transformation. Growing up amid addiction and incarceration, she navigated college and early adulthood with limited support, losing both her father and brother in the span of a few years.

“Hailey has not only broken through barriers herself, she is actively clearing the path for others to follow.”

At KSM, Hailey created the PHAD support system for tax preparers, redefined firm-wide processes and led staff training initiatives. She’s a mentor, mother and role model who shows that success is not just about achievement—it’s about using your story to help others rise. Hailey’s leadership is rooted in empathy and action, and her impact reaches far beyond the walls of her firm.

 


 

The Emerging Leader Award honors up-and-coming leaders in the profession for going above and beyond in their work for their employer, clients or community.

Darion Harris is a senior manager at PwC who has advanced rapidly while remaining deeply committed to building a more inclusive profession.

“Darion exemplifies what it means to be an up-and-coming leader. His leadership style is hands-on and collaborative, inspiring those around him to perform at their best.”

Darion leads with empathy and drive—he’s a trusted leader in PwC’s insurance audit practice and a champion for belonging through local and national inclusion initiatives. He created a scholarship at his alma mater, Warren Central High School, and helped host NABA’s Accelerated Career Awareness Program (ACAP) student visit to PwC, giving high school students a firsthand look at the profession and creating space for meaningful conversations about career paths and representation.

“He’s working his way to the ultimate goal of partner—and doing it with purpose.” Darion’s blend of technical excellence, inclusive leadership and community service makes him a standout among emerging leaders in the profession.

Nick Heiny’s vision centers on innovation, mentorship and elevating audit quality. As a manager at Forvis Mazars, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s PCAOB assurance methodology and SEC audit practices.

“Nick doesn’t just complete tasks—he elevates them. He’s a catalyst for progress.”

Nick has led national initiatives, authored firm-wide guidance and presented at the firm’s inaugural PCAOB Conference. He’s also deeply committed to mentoring junior staff, recruiting at IU Kelley and volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters. His self-nomination highlighted his leadership in integrating audit methodology across the firm following major mergers and acquisitions. Nick’s forward-thinking mindset and dedication to both professional and community development make him a standout in the accounting profession.

Bailey Martenson has quickly made her mark, rising to manager at Sikich through a combination of hard work, strategic thinking and a deep commitment to others. “She has already been entrusted with various leadership roles in the local market, reflecting both her capabilities and the confidence others place in her.”

Bailey’s impact goes far beyond her technical expertise. She’s described as a “five-tool player,” someone who excels in client service, mentorship, business development and community engagement. She’s active in more than a dozen professional and civic organizations and is currently in her second year of the INCPAS Young Pros Leadership Academy.

“Bailey is the hardest working person I know. She shows up with a smile and a solutions-first approach. She’s a powerhouse CPA with a heart for community, a passion for excellence and a desire to grow.”

Bailey’s story is one of momentum and meaning—proof that leadership isn’t about waiting your turn, but about showing up, stepping in and making an impact from day one.

At 25, Riley Shives was promoted to VP of finance at The Garrett Companies, one of the nation’s largest multifamily developers.

“Riley has consistently demonstrated strategic insight and a deep understanding of the real estate development space.” Starting as an intern in 2021, he quickly advanced through the organization, earning his CPA along the way. His leadership is marked by integrity, collaboration and results.

Outside of his corporate role, Riley helped establish the Garrett Family Foundation, where he oversees finances and ensures its mission to support individuals facing hardships is fulfilled. A former NCAA Division I soccer player, Riley brings the same drive and discipline to his professional life, making him a standout Emerging Leader.

Caitlin Vergon is a manager in KSM’s Real Estate Services Group, where she’s known for her technical excellence, mentorship and leadership across the firm.

Caitlin teaches KSM’s “From College to KSM” onboarding course, co-launched the Real Estate mentoring program and leads SURGE, the firm’s young professionals group. She also started a Bible study group and volunteers with Meals on Wheels.

She’s active in recruiting, mentoring and professional development; she has also served as a CPA Week speaker and INCPAS Scholars panelist. “She leads through action—mentoring, supporting interns and contributing to cultural and professional development initiatives with humility and reliability.”

Caitlin’s blend of initiative, empathy and excellence makes her a true emerging leader in the profession.

Adrienne Anderson is a campus recruiting specialist at Deloitte, where she’s known for her strategic approach to talent acquisition and her deep commitment to student success.

“Adrienne has significantly impacted the lives of students matriculating through the INCPAS Scholars and Purdue’s BOP Program.”

Adrienne has recruited top talent across Indiana, hosted office visits, led student events and helped students launch their careers. She leads with empathy and drives results, creating opportunities for others and strengthening the profession.

Her work extends beyond Deloitte—she’s a mentor, speaker and volunteer who brings authenticity and purpose to every interaction. Her blend of strategic leadership, mentorship and service makes her a true champion of the talent pipeline.

Karli Azar is a powerhouse in campus recruiting and a passionate advocate for the future of the CPA profession. As campus recruiter at CBIZ CPAs, she’s spent the past eight years building bridges between students and accounting careers—transforming recruiting into a mission of mentorship, empowerment and inclusion.

“Karli gives students the tools, resources and confidence they need to pursue their CPA and launch successful careers.” Another colleague said, “She doesn’t just talk pipelines—she builds them.”

Karli’s impact spans universities across the region and beyond. She serves on advisory boards, mentors students and partners with organizations like Beta Alpha Psi and ALPFA to expand access to the profession. She’s a frequent speaker at student events, including NABA’s ACAP and the Society’s Interview Prep series. She also leads CBIZ’s Emerging Professionals Employee Resource Group and serves on the firm’s Culture Committee, ensuring that support for young professionals continues well beyond the hiring process.

Karli’s approach is personal and intentional. She uses her social media skills to promote CBIZ and the CPA profession with authenticity and energy, sends personalized follow-ups to every student she meets and organizes collaborative gatherings of accounting educators to strengthen the pipeline from classroom to career. Her energy, authenticity and relentless commitment to student success make her not just a recruiter, but also a champion for emerging talent.

Crenel also plays a key role in INCPAS and NABA initiatives, hosting NABA’s Accelerated Career Awareness Program (ACAP) and INCPAS Scholars campus visits and facilitating the student panel at Vision 2027. His ability to connect with students and professionals alike makes him a powerful advocate for talent development. As one colleague noted: “He bridges generations and brings out the best in people.”

Whether he’s mentoring students one-on-one, building community through programming or creating space for honest conversations, Crenel leads with empathy and intention. His work doesn’t just support students—it transforms their trajectory.

The Visionary Award honors a transformative individual or organization implementing activities, processes or programs designed to address future issues or needs.

Crystal Allen is the CEO and VP of tax and accounting services at A Total Solution CPA & Consulting Services Inc., a firm she co-founded to provide comprehensive financial services to businesses, nonprofits and government entities. Her career spans more than 14 years in public service with the Department of Defense, where she led financial reporting and compliance initiatives, and nearly two decades as an entrepreneur committed to client success and strategic growth.

“Crystal is a distinguished CPA whose career blends technical mastery, entrepreneurial innovation and trailblazing representation.” She’s also a dedicated mentor and educator, having taught college-level accounting and served on multiple boards, including the AGA Financial Management Standards Board and the City of Indianapolis Audit Committee. Crystal’s leadership is marked by authenticity, excellence and a deep investment in others—making her a true visionary in the profession.

BJ shifted the firm’s 10-year strategy from revenue goals to a new metric: lives positively impacted. He believes success is measured not just in numbers, but in the well-being and growth of the people behind them. Weekly firmwide updates, revamped KPIs and the launch of new service lines—including International Tax and HR—reflect his commitment to transparency, innovation and inclusion. He’s also strengthened the trust and estate tax practice and deepened relationships with local colleges and universities, helping build a more connected and future-ready profession.

The Volunteer of the Year Award honors a member who has shown unwavering dedication to serving the Society in volunteer roles.

Dr. Kelsey Brasel is the chair of the Paul W. Parkison Department of Accounting at Ball State University, where she’s known for balancing high academic standards with deep compassion for her students.

“She’s always available to support students—whether it’s discussing CPA studies, career paths or helping them recover from setbacks.”

Kelsey is a driving force behind Ball State’s involvement with the Indiana CPA Society, and stepped up to make NABA’s weeklong Accelerated Career Awareness Program (ACAP) a success. She jumped in with little notice and made it all come together for the students. Kelsey secured housing, dining, classrooms, speakers and faculty with almost no lead time. Her quick action and leadership ensured the program didn’t just happen; it thrived.

She’s known for her hands-on teaching style, accessibility and commitment to student growth. Kelsey also serves as a faculty advisor for the new NABA Student Chapter, partners with INCPAS on workforce initiatives, and is a constant source of support for students navigating academic and personal challenges.

Brendon Howell is a deals senior manager at PwC, where he combines technical excellence with a deep commitment to mentorship and community impact. He’s a longtime leader in both INCPAS and NABA and a driving force behind the return of NABA’s Accelerated Career Awareness Program (ACAP) to Indiana after a seven-year hiatus.

“He selflessly gave of himself the entire week and kept an energy level and positivity that very few could equal.” As ACAP program administrator, Brendon led a team of counselors and 30 high school students through a transformative week—living in the dorms, coordinating logistics, mentoring students and ensuring every detail was in place. His leadership made the program not only possible, but unforgettable.

Brendon’s impact extends beyond ACAP. He regularly volunteers for CPA Week, hosts student visits to PwC and speaks at events to demystify the profession and inspire future CPAs. His work connects students to mentors, resources and real-world opportunities. Brendon shows up, gives his time and makes the profession feel welcoming to those just beginning to imagine themselves in it.

Chaleise Fleming is a tax principal at Barnes Dennig who has led through change with poise and purpose.

“Chaleise led her team through a major merger, managing client communications, staff engagement and expanded responsibilities with grace.”

She’s a CPA and a certified fraud examiner, and has served in leadership roles across tax and fractional accounting. Chaleise is deeply involved with INCPAS, serving on multiple councils and advisory boards, and is a board member for Executive Women in Finance and the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce.

Chaleise brings clarity, strength and mentorship to every space she enters, making a lasting impact on the profession and those around her.

Shaun Mawhorter is a partner at Kruggel Lawton CPAs and the first female partner to serve on the firm’s Executive Committee.

She co-leads the firm’s Women’s Initiative Network (KLWIN), mentors staff across all levels, and leads recruiting, retention and training efforts. Shaun is known for her integrity, empathy and ability to empower others—especially women navigating career and family. Outside of work, she serves on multiple boards in Elkhart County and is deeply involved in community service. Shaun leads with authenticity and heart, creating space for others to grow and thrive.

Eva is a passionate advocate for working adult learners, having earned her degrees online while balancing work and family. She mentors women in finance and leadership, volunteers with Junior Achievement and supports financial literacy programs for elementary students. She’s also a frequent speaker at Purdue leadership events and actively supports alumni mentorship programs. Eva’s story is one of perseverance, purpose and impact—proof that leadership is built through service and a commitment to lifting others.

Clients praise her for her reliability, deep expertise and collaborative approach. She’s known for making audits constructive, not transactional, and for mentoring young professionals with care and clarity.

Sara serves on the board of the Marion County Commission on Youth, volunteers with her church’s youth group and contributes to her firm’s Community Engagement Council. Sara leads with purpose and professionalism, bringing excellence to every relationship and every challenge.

Erin Wagoner is the chief people officer at Katz, Sapper & Miller, where she leads HR strategy, employee experience and firm culture.

Her career spans audit, tax advisory, nonprofit leadership and academia. She’s led onboarding for three acquisitions, enhanced audit training and challenged learning and development to innovate. Erin also serves on the board of Grace Horizon, a nonprofit supporting vulnerable women.

She was honored with KSM’s Scott Read Ingenuity Award in 2024 and is known for her strategic vision, empathy and commitment to professional growth. Erin’s leadership is grounded in empathy and vision, bringing people together and helping them grow.
