Why Mentors Matter

INCPAS Scholars mentors play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Indiana’s accounting profession. For high school students, having a mentor means more than just career advice. It’s also about having someone in their corner who can encourage, guide and open doors to possibilities they may have never imagined.

As a mentor, you’ll be the person who helps a Scholar picture themselves in college, explore the CPA profession and gain confidence in their next steps. Many mentors say the experience is as rewarding for them as it is for their Scholar! It’s a chance to give back, build relationships and see your impact firsthand.

The Commitment (and the Support You’ll Receive)

We know you are busy, so we’ve designed this program with realistic expectations and plenty of support. Mentors are asked to:

  • Connect regularly: At least one email, two texts and one phone conversation with your Scholar each month.
  • Meet in person: Coffee or lunch at least once per semester.
  • Show up: Attend the Welcome Dinner (in late-September) and at least one other INCPAS Scholars event.
  • Give back: Participate in a classroom presentation during CPA Week (INCPAS provides the slides, talking points and coordinates with the school).
  • Membership: Maintain INCPAS membership (new mentors will be invoiced at the first-time member rate of $150).
  • Background check: Complete before being matched with your Scholar.

Tools to Make Mentoring Easy

You are never on your own in this program. Every mentor receives:

  • A Mentor Toolkit with everything you need to get started.
  • A full calendar of events so you can plan ahead.
  • Monthly discussion guides with suggested topics, questions and tips for talking with your Scholar.
  • Regular emails and text reminders with event details and RSVP links.
  • Mentor training to help you feel prepared and confident.
  • Ongoing support from INCPAS staff — you’ll always have someone to call if you’re stuck or need advice.

These resources are designed to make mentoring simple, impactful and fun. Review a sample Mentor Toolkit for full details.
