INCPAS Calls on Indiana Members of Congress to Support IRS Authority to Suspend Additional Notices

Mar 9, 2022

As part of the INCPAS advocacy team's ongoing efforts to ease the burden of delayed or erroneous IRS notices on you, your clients and companies, we are requesting the IRS be granted temporary authority to suspend approved notices.

In February, four Indiana representatives joined hundreds of their colleagues in signing bipartisan letters to the Treasury Department urging it to improve this year’s tax filing season process.

Now in March, we are calling on Indiana's Congressional delegation to support additional measures for the IRS to either unilaterally — or through Congressionally granted powers — temporarily pause additional notices.

To Indiana's Congressional delegation

We, the Indiana CPA Society and our members, have reached out to you several times during the pandemic to bring awareness to the serious issues taxpayers and CPAs who service taxpayers are encountering with IRS services. We are, once again seeking your support on this issue.

We respectfully request your support for asking the IRS to share which additional notices could be unilaterally suspended by the IRS, and what necessary authority Congress may need to provide to the IRS to temporarily pause the notices that are contributing to taxpayer confusion and correspondence backlogs.

Senator Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator Cassidy (R-LA) are circulating a letter calling on IRS Commissioner Rettig to clarify which additional notices can be paused by the IRS and where Congressional intervention may be required to temporarily suspend other notices. This letter follows up on previous bipartisan and bicameral efforts to request the IRS to offer reasonable measures of relief to taxpayers who are struggling this filing season due to the backlog of returns and correspondence at the IRS.

To sign on, please email Olivia Khalili (Olivia_Khalili@menendez.senate.gov) in Senator Menendez’ office or Owen Morgan (Owen_Morgan@cassidy.senate.gov) in Senator Cassidy’s office. The deadline to sign is COB Thursday, March 10th.

On behalf of the 7,100 members of the Indiana CPA Society, and the CPA profession we appreciate your support in providing taxpayer relief from notices. Thank you for understanding how these issues are adversely affecting taxpayers in Indiana and for supporting measures to remedy the issues.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact me, and thank you for your support of taxpayers and tax preparers.

Sincerely,
Courtney J. Kincaid, CAE, IOM
President & CEO
