INCPAS Chair Erland Porter, CPA, reflects on the past year in his leadership role.

What did you enjoy most about your year as INCPAS Chair?

I have enjoyed the entire experience of serving as the INCPAS Chair. I look back most fondly on our challenging board room conversations about social justice. As accountants are prone to do, we leveraged professional research as well as narrative to push our boundaries. As I look forward to the future of the Society, I am confident the tough conversations will continue, and we will do our part to advance the profession.

How would you encourage other members to get involved with INCPAS?

Nearly everyone I know has more professional and personal responsibilities than they ever imagined. This makes it difficult to find ways to be actively involved. The benefits of volunteering with INCPAS include not only making a major impact on the profession, but also having the flexibility to serve in one-time or ongoing capacities. Giving back to make the profession stronger for the future is possible no matter how much time you have.

Why are you a member of INCPAS?

I joined INCPAS to increase my volunteer opportunities. Introducing students to the possibilities available through accounting has been important to me my entire career. Once I was connected to the student programs at INCPAS, I continued to find more ways to get involved and make an impact. Now that I have seen the reach of the organization and the value of volunteers, I cannot imagine not being a member of the Society.
